In 1252 Alphonse of Toulouse, a brother of King Louis IX of France, founded Villefranche on the site of an older village, which was called La Peyrade. In 1256 was drawn up a document with trading rules. From that time there rich merchants came to the city. In 1347 a wall was cinstructed around the city. In the secand half of the 14th century Villefranche slowly but surely took over from Sauveterre de Rouergue the role of center city .

In 1628 a third of the population died of the plague.

Villefranche de Rouergue is originally a "bastide", characterized by a pattern of straight narrow streets, dividng the blocks into squares. In the center stands the Collegiàle, the church from the 14th century. It has a tower 58 meters high, which dominates the town. In front of the chuch lies Place Notre Dame, a square with arcades, where on Thursday morning a market find place. On the Thursday market are all kinds of traders, it is a large regional market. But very special is the part of the market on the Place Notre Dame, where small producers offer their home-grown wares. There are providers with a single basket of vegetables from their garden, or with a few chickens from their own yard. The Villefranche Thursday market has great significance for all small local economy, but also offers everyone the opportunity to try out the local specialties or to buy ecologically grown products.
